Introduction

As underlined by the HLEG on Scientific Data report, training and education is essential to develop and maintain data infrastructure. In this we need to be aware of different target groups and scopes to be addressed, e.g.:

  1. Basic training on data management as a routine, required component of the graduate-level science curriculum, to educate (future) users.
  2. Training and continuous workshops, to keep data infrastructure experts on the state of the art.
  3. Briefings for management.
  4. Formal, recognized graduate and training programs in informatics and scientific data stewardship, to educate young experts.
  5. Impressive demonstrations, to showcase the use of data infrastructure to pupils and the society.

10-year vision

By 2020 e-Infrastructure and more specifically data management training is included in the academic curricula in Europe and beyond. Elements of data management training are included even in the secondary educational system and a growing number of skilled ICT pupils and students exists. By 2020 the shortage in the area of skilled people in ICT and e-Infrastructures is being reduced.
